Nya Lumia.

A year or so after it acquired Nokia’s phone division, Microsoft is finally ready to show us its new family of Lumia devices: it has two flagship-grade devices and two mid-rangers in the planning, according to Nokia Power User.

The launch of the new devices will coincide with the public release of the massive Windows 10 update, a unified version of the Windows operating system that will run on all screens, from TV to desktop and laptop, to tablets and phones (the latter will use the new Modern Live Tile interface).

THE MICROSOFT LUMIA 940 IS EXPECTED TO FILL THE WINDOWS PHONE FLAGSHIP VOID

The two most interesting new launches are expected to be the Microsoft Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL, a super-sized version. Rumors point out that the Lumia 940 will feature a 5-inch screen, while the Lumia 940 XL could get a phablet-sized, 5.7-inch screen. Both are expected to continue the tradition of using high-quality cameras, and this time around the two new flagship Lumias are expected to make the jump to a 24-25-megapixel sensor under the PureView brand. Up front, the selfie cam is said to feature a a resolution no less than 5 megapixels.

What’s even more fascinating is that rumors also suggest these new devices will have three key innovative features: some form of 3D-interaction, an iris scanner, and native stylus support. Given Microsoft’s infatuation with holograms, we can’t be too skeptical, but the left side of our brain also warns us that all previous attempts at 3D interaction (hey, Amazon Fire Phone!) have been a failure, often of huge proportions. Then, the iris scanning technology is another futuristic tech that sounds cool at first, but comes with many unknowns: will it work in the dark? How fast is it? And isn’t it just more practical to have a fingerprint scanner? Lastly, stylus support is something that is just cool, and while not everyone will use it, those who do will appreciate having the feature.

Next, Microsoft is allegedly also planning to give its mid-range a refresh with successors to the Lumia 830 and Lumia 730 affordable phones. The phones are said to be planned as the Lumia 840 and Lumia 740. The higher-end Lumia 840 is expected to feature a 13-14-megapixel camera with PureView branding, and a 5-inch-ish display. Then, the Lumia 740 is likely to come in an XL-sized version with a large 5.5” to 5.7” screen.

So far, that’s all rumors tell us about the upcoming Windows 10 Microsoft Lumia flagships. Do you think Microsoft stands a chance against the super-powerful Apple iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 with its new Lumias?
