Huawei sets sales target at 100m phones.

HUAWEI Technologies Co aims to increase smartphone sales by a third to hit 100 million units this year, targeting overseas market and high-end models above US$300, the Shenzhen-based telecommunications giant said yesterday.

Huawei’s global smartphone sales reached 75 million units in 2014, a 40 percent increase year on year. The consumer business unit revenue will hit US$16 billion this year compared with US$12 billion last year, fueled by booming high-end smartphone sales, said Yu Chengdong, chief executive of the unit.
“We are giving up the low end of the market. Now we care more about profit and international brand awareness,” said Yu.
Huawei aims to increase the sales proportion of smartphones costing over US$300 to more than 30 percent this year, compared with 18 percent last year.
Other Chinese makers, including Xiaomi, Meizu and Lenovo, all launched high-end models recently, aiming to grab market share from Apple and Samsung Electronics.
Huawei also said it would be increasing investment in expanding overseas markets, such as building more brand stores from the 630 stores around the world by the end of 2014.
Huawei ranked fifth in the global smartphone market at the end of September with a 5.1 percent market share, behind Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi and LG, according to US-based research firm Strategy Analytics.
