Xiaomi Edges Out HTC to Enter Top 10 Global Smartphone Manufacturers.

Xiaomi is growing, and they’re doing it in a big way. They have effectively bumped HTC out of the global top ten list of handset manufacturers. If you live in the U.S. and aren’t familiar with the global market, you’re going to be surprised at some of the names here.

Xiaomi can now say they’re one of the big dogs, and we’re unfortunately waving goodbye to HTC. According to these stats from Canalys, 279.4 million smartphones were shipped worldwide in the first quarter of this year. 97.5 million of those phones were sold in China, and this is where things get interesting. Xiaomi is selling so many smartphones in China that they’ve edged their way into the top ten. Five of the top ten handset manufacturers in the world are now Chinese. We’ve been talking about this surge of Chinese OEMs, and now we’re seeing it in the numbers.
Huawei is number three on this list, Lenovo is number four, Xiaomi surged all the way up to number six, Coolpad is eight, and ZTE is the ninth largest as of Q1 2014. Samsung is still the largest manufacturer in worldwide smartphone shipments, holding down 31 percent of all shipments. Apple came in second with 16 percent of worldwide shipments. Samsung leads all smartphone shipments in China, even with all of the Chinese manufacturers growing the way they are.
Xiaomi ships almost all of their phones to Chinese consumers, with 97 percent of all their smartphones ending up in their homeland. They can’t yet be considered a global manufacturer, but they are moving towards that. Even with most of their phones staying within their own borders they are still the number six manufacturer in the world. It won’t be long before we see Hugo Barra and company begin selling phones in the global markets. They are planning on moving into ten new markets this year, including India and Indonesia. They should be launching in Malaysia within the next few weeks. I can’t wait until we easily get Xiaomi phones in the U.S., and once that happens it will be interesting to see how these numbers fluctuate at that time compared to now. In a few years we might even see other Chinese OEMs come close to making this list like OnePlus or Oppo.
